Today's entry has been rattling around my coconut for the last couple of months, I first heard it on a hung over Sunday morning whilst visiting some friends; the compilation playing had been put together by Hunter (Aged 3) and this was his favorite tune.
Once back home my clouded vision impaired me of the track's vital information (I.E. who the track was by).
Eventually the pieces fell into place and it turns out the tune had been loitering in my iTunes all along; The Limiñanas self titled debut came out in 2010 and you will undoubtedly hear traces of Stereolab, Broadcast and Serge within their psychedelic workouts. Optimo music return with a very special release; Chris Carter's 'Moonlight' was part of his 1985 long player 'Mondo Beat'. The record has been bootlegged many times and has been a DJ favorite since the late eighties.
Optimo employ the services of Neurotic Drum Band & Oneohtrix Point Never for their reinterpretations of the original (And they are reinterpretations as there were no parts to work with and they had to start from scratch).
Its the NDB take that we feature here, in the words of the label:

'Keeping the original feel, slowing it down just a touch and ultra cosmic-a-fying it for an ultra-headtrip psychedelic spaceflight'

Modeselektor return with their third studio album 'Monkeytown' on their own Monkeytown imprint. It confirms their place (At least in my brain) as the eminent dance floor act in current circulation.
You get the usual rib rattling epicness that has long been their disposition, the most interesting productions though are with the guest vocalists that litter the record. Stellar contributions from the likes of Thom Yorke, PVT and Anti Pop Consortium, it's the futuristic R&B collaboration with Miss Platinum that we feature here. This week sees the release of the fifth studio album from Death In Vegas; During the seven years since DIV's last long player main man Richard Fearless decamped to New York city and spent many hours experimenting in the studio in an attempt to define his sound.
What we get with 'Trans Love Energies' is a wholly dance floor based record with nods to Germany in the early 1970's, New York in the late 70's and Acid house in the the late eighties; We are featuring 'Your Loft My Acid' which is exactly the type of thing you'd like to hear if your were dancing at the loft on acid.

Lot's of noise for Clams Casino at the moment & why not? His 'Instrumentals' LP has been a fine musical companion these past few weeks, a smart blend of hip hop beats with a dance aesthetic. The stand out track for me is the epic Bjork sampling 'Illest Alive'.

Rounding off a splendid week with news of a resplendent new record from T.E.E. (Turzi Electronique Experience). As the title suggests, it's a computerized record from Gallic producer Turzi who's last release was of a more psychedelic nature (Never one to get in the way of a good press release);

"A true artist, Romain Turzi once again broke free from his own codes. Instead of blinding us with science, he went for the unknown. From disciplinary rock he moved on to revisionary electronics. Turzi's Electronic Experience is set on educating the listener, transmit the process he himself went through, get him out of his intellectual comfort zone. It was already the case with Made Under Authority, then seen as an anomaly, before 'krautrock' became everybody's favourite buzzword – and, in fact, his path is similar to what the prime krautrockers themselves did, like Can embracing reggae or Kraftwerk going techno-pop under the influence of François Kevorkian, both propositions being ill-received in their time.

The François K of Education is PILOOSKI, well known for his edits of pre-existing tracks, making them more danceable and to the point. The same process was used on Turzi's tracks, sometimes too long or unfocused : coming straight from club culture, unlike Romain who'd sooner play music sitting down in his home than dancing in a club, Pilooski moved the cursor from layers of arrangements to the core of the songs, and provided them with the directness that will allow them to speak to the body as well as the mind."

Some records are so wonderfully alluring that they lull the listener into a sense of deep serenity ; The debut offering from A Winged Victory For The Sullen is not one for the car then, the line up comprises of Adam Wiltzie (From Stars Of The Lid) and composer Dustin OʼHalloran joined by other luminaries such as violinist Peter Broderick. The group formed in memory of Sparklehorse front man Mark Linkous who sadly passed last year, and they focused very much on recording traditional instruments in large, cavernous rooms.

I've just put down the immensely enjoyable Keith Richards autobiography "Life"; The story of one mans unshakable love of music with a huge dose of near death experiences and great escapes thrown in for good measure. How did one man get to be so lucky? Well, the sun does shine on the righteous baby.
The overriding feeling I get from his scribes is that Keith would be doing what he does to an audience of none. Music just pours out of him, it's something he has to do. Carry on Keef. Recommended for anyone with a remote interest in music or human beings.

Musically speaking, the worse thing about the riots has been the loss of the Sony PIAS/Warehouse. PIAS represent independent music and the burning of the warehouse means real problems for many indies including Border Community, Chemikal Underground, Kompakt, Turk, Warp & XL Recordings amongst many others (Full list here). Way too stick it to the man, kids.
Also amongst those affected are Manchester's Finders Keepers. You'll be familiar with their happy nack of finding wonderful, long out of print records & re-releasing them to the public at large. Their latest offering is a reissue of the 'Werewolves On Wheels' soundtrack from 1971. Don Gere was the man entrusted with the film's musical score & he didn't disappoint, producing a frazzled, psychedelic accompaniment very much in keeping with the spirit of the times.
You can pick up the record from the Finders Keepers store (Both physically & digitally). Just go out and buy an independent record will ya?

Following on from yesterdays lost sixties artifact, here's a similar gem from the 1970's; Gary Higgins debut long player 'Red Hash' came out in March 1973, unfortunately for Higgins he was already locked up in a maximum security prison, the victim of a cannabis bust. He was also one of Nixon's first victims in the newly declared 'War On Drugs' (How's that working out for ya?) and spent many years behind bars.
The record was discovered by a new audience & 'Red Hash' was re-released in 2005: It's a beautiful collection of frazzled, folky blues. Get your copy here.

The great thing about the music that emanated from the 1960's is the sheer volume of bands who produced one 45 and then vanished from the musical landscape all together; A very good case in point being The Hush who came together for one session in 1968, (and as far as we know) 'Elephant Rider/Grey' was the only thing they ever put down on tape.
It's the blistering 'Grey' that we feature, if you listen closely you'll be able to spot the Sebadoh sample.

Cast your minds back to the year of 2007. Phone hacking was a mere blink in Rupert Murdoch's eye and an I pad was just a fancy name for a pirates eye patch.
This blog was in it's infancy and we were very much taken with SebastiAn and his form of mutilated funk. Time passed and so does taste. These days I find a lot of so called 'electro' just a bit too noisy. SebastiAn has finally got round to releasing his debut long player, and whilst all of it might not be quite up my alley, this most certainly is. Yacht appear back on the horizon this week with their splendid new opus 'Shangri-la'; It confirms their status (At least in my brain) as one of the most interesting pop bands currently in circulation, the record harnesses the sound of the DFA bunker with a smart lyrical bent. For example, check this rhyming couplet on 'Love in the Dark':

'I love you like a small town cop, I wanna smash your face in with a rock'

Something today from the quite brilliant new LP from Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore; 'Demolished Thoughts' has been produced by Beck and displays a quieter, more thoughtful approach than we're used too.
Don't be fooled though there are some great songs lurking here. None more so than the beautiful 'Benediction'.

This rather charming version of Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" appeared recently on the web world wide, It's the work of Aidan Moffat who you may remember from Scottish miserabilists Arab Strap. Here's his very own thoughts on the track:

"I recorded this for a (very, very good) short film by Paul Wright called 'Believe'. It was released on a 7" that came free with the Aidan Moffat & The Best-Ofs limited edition board game box set of 'How To Get To Heaven From Scotland', but otherwise nobody's heard it, and it was never available digitally. I just found it tucked away in my iTunes folders and I'm quite fond of it, so I thought I'd give it away, because that's the kind of generous guy I am. By the way, the reason it's not a duet and I'm singing both Sonny's and Cher's parts is because the film is about a man coming to terms with the death of his wife, and this was Their Song. There's a scene where he eats her ashes, so he's clearly not coping well."

Back with a very gentle bang in the shape of Ewan Pearson's recent mix for Oki-Ni. Here is the man himself with some words about the mix:

"Peal" is kind of a home-listening mix I guess, in the sense that this is the kind of thing I listen to when I'm not at work. All I knew when I started was that I didn't want to put any house or techno in it.

I haven't quite kept to that original plan; there is an Isolée track in there, along with a couple of proto or ambient techno things. But it was meant to be pretty abstract or contrapuntal stuff, plenty of mood and melody and a few songs at the close also"
