I once spent a year in Philadelphia, I think it was on a Sunday..

Another remarkable selection courtesy of those lovely chaps over at 14 Tracks; Last weeks collection focused on disco with electronically enhanced grooves. Mega picks from the likes of Space System, Peter Gordon & Love of Life Orchestra, Soundforce and many more (11 to be precise).
A little taste for you, here's Pablo Mandelbrot with the wonderfully mutated 'Hot Swap'. Pick up the record here.

Also included is the eccentric musings of Bruce Haack. Stones Throw have recently reissued his seminal recordings entitled 'Farad: The Electronic Voice';
Haack built one of the first truly musical vocoders in 1969, naming it 'Farad' after 1800's English chemist/physicist Michael Faraday. Haack's album Electric Lucifer (1970) was the first rock album to include the vocoder and was followed several years later by Kraftwerk's Autobahn.

Just Press Play Mixtape Vol 11: Psychedelia

Volume 11 of the mixtape focuses on all things psychedelic: Contains tracks from Billy Nicholls, The Alps, The Temptations, Illes and many more. Host is JT. Available from Mixcloud.

I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer..

The Phantom Band have certainly wasted no time in following up last years 'Checkmate Savage', new long player 'The Wants' is now available from your local record store. Cementing their place as one of the most interesting guitar bands to eminate from our fair Isles in a long time, the record sees them continue their sonic experiments through a range of different styles. None more so than on standout track 'The None Of One', an 8 minute beast that begins all ballad like, bursts out into a kraut sphere and ends in a beautiful swirl. Go see the band as they are on tour all over the place.

Exciting news if you are of a Kraut persuasion, the first fruits of Hallo Gallo 2010 are now available. Hallo Gallo 2010 is a collaboration between Michael Rother (Co-founder of Neu! amongst many other things), Steve Shelley from Sonic Youth and Aaron Mullan of Tall Firs. Here is 'Blinkgurtel' which sees the band endeavoring to update the motorik template.

We could be men with ven..

You can always trust the Optimo boys with your ears. The latest release on Optimo Music is from Space System and it's bloody marvelous:

"In 2009, they (Space System) sent their debut album to JD Twitch who was instantly smitten by their unique sound, incredible, beautiful production and startling originality. He instantly asked if he could release two of the standout tracks on vinyl and over a year later, here they are.
When music is this great and this timeless, a year means nothing"

The EP contains remixes from JD Twitch & King Of Town. It also includes the incredibly beautiful 'Petik'. Get it here.

Another very strong package in the shape of Bob Holroyd's 'African Drug' which is out now on Phonica Records. The Four Tet remix is obviously superb, we are featuring the T Williams Keye rework which is equally formidable. Watch out for ya bass bins at about 1.09. Pick up the wax here.

Stick it on the laterbase..

Lots of superlatives flying about the interwebs for James Blake's new EP 'Klavierwerke' which is out now on R&S Records. A genuinely innovative collection of songs that will slip seductively into your subconscious. Imagine Sigur Ros fronted by Antony Hegarty recording at the Black Ark and your halfway there.

Yeah, this is raw. Who is this, is this us?

The Alps new record 'Le Voyage' has been out for a wee while now, it's delicate beauty is a perfect match for the current autumnal bliss we are experiencing in the UK. Get the LP for a very reasonable price over at Boomkat.

The Soundcarriers also have a recent album on the record store shelves, 'Celeste' is out via Melodic records. You will immediately draw reference to other psych minded artists such as Stereolab and Broadcast. Here is the very aptly named 'Last Broadcast'.

I'd probably be very angry with you right now, if I weren't so incredibly high..

A couple of splendid records from very opposite ends of the spectrum to tell you about. Deerhunter continue their majestic run of long players with 'Halcyon Digest'. The next time you hear someone banging on about the dearth of good guitar bands, point them in Bradford's direction. From the album here's the beautiful 'Helicopter' which heavily features that most underused of instruments, the harpsichord.

Eskmo returns with a fine new LP for Ninja tunes. Showcasing his special brand of glooptronica, here's a few words from the man himself:

The album was written over a six month stretch “in the middle of a whole bunch of personal relationship-type stuff, a lot of deep life-experiences happening that helped the music just bleed out of me. I just poured all those feelings into the music, it’s very cathartic. This is the first full body of work where I’m singing all over it, and allowing myself to get over that furlough of expression has been really liberating.

What we really need to do is create a powerful sense of dread..

Things I have learned this week: Do not try & write a blog post whilst on valium. It's not big or clever. Back pain is a muthafucker. Here are some tunes that have helped me through my convalescence.
