No, for your information I have full sized balls..

Architeq's debut LP 'Green & Gold' is out now and it's a supreme combination of electronic music in it's many guises. Excellent dubhopdiscosoul to nod ya head and move ya feet. I was lucky enough to have an interweb chat with the man behind Architeq, Sam Annand.

Can you tell us about your musical history?

I don't have much history cause I'm still pretty young as it goes... I was really into the guitar when I was younger, I jammed in a lot of bands and started playing around with recording and from there got into making stuff on my own with some synths and what ever I had to hand. At about the same time when I was 17, I got a job with sound system company in Dundee lifting enormous speakers and amp racks all over Scotland in a van. After a year or 2 the guys who ran the company must have figured I wasn't blagging anymore and started letting me behind the desk. A lot of the work was Ska or Reggae bands which was wicked cause those guys always wanted you to dub them + they were all like 5 to 20kw systems which was shit hot for testing tracks out on...

I learnt a lot from that job and the guys I worked with. From there I started getting more recording work in studios and that's what I do now... I've always made my own tracks at the same time as engineering for work, they go together hand in hand... Last year I must have recorded around 30plus albums worth of East End hiphop and grime alone, along with all sorts of other stuff including reggae musical soundtracks and Islamic prayers... It can be quite out-there. There was a guy who came in to record one day, he carefully placed a rusty saw against the wall of the studio and proceeded to make up songs about this rusty old saw and how much it meant to him. That was probably the first time I experienced true fear....

Favourite current tracks/albums?

I'm really loving everything that's coming off the Swedish "Information" label recently... The Fontan and Dan Lissvik albums are unique and brilliant. Very psychedelic but the melodies are sublime, highly recommend both.
The Samoyed album "Always From This Point" is another, I think it came out last year but I only got a copy recently and it's been the soundtrack to my mornings ever since. It seems to be out on an island on it's own with all the other stuff that's going on in electronic music at the minute.

Favourite track(s)/album of the decade?

Shit, there is a lot....

The Analord series by AFX is up there for sure. Dunno if that counts as an album though... Loved the Tuss EP's too.
Dabrye's "Instrmntl" , BoC's "Geogaddi" and Chris Clark's "Empty The Bones of You" are up there. Emperor Machine's "Aimee Talluah is Hypnotized", everything Squarepusher did, Lightning Bolt's "Wonderful Rainbow", Matthew Dear's "Leave Luck To Heaven", Wight Light Orchestra 12"s, Ilija Rudman 12"s, Syclops 12"s on Tirk/DFA, Lindstrom's "Another Side of Lindstrom" there's been a lot of good electronic music...

There are a few guest vocalists on the record, anyone you'd like to work with in the future?

I'd like to do a track with Steve Mason from The Beta Band/King Biscuit Time. I can't get enough of the vocals on the first Beta Band album, like the Fife equivalent of Brian Wilson or something. Lots of layers and echo, lurvely...

Which actor/actress would play you in the film of your life?

I reckon Michael York from his Logan's Run days. He's got the hair + it'd be worth it just to hear him try a Scottish accent...

Favourite Insult?

Plum

Who do you think would win in a fight between Grace Jones & Brigitte Nielsen?

My money's on Grace Jones for sure...

'Green & Gold' is out now on Tirk recordings.
