Limitless paper in a paperless World

If your feeling a bit woozy, you could do a lot worse than stick on the debut album from Arp. Lots of minimal, pulsing pleasantness. The record 'In Light' will be shortly released on Smalltown records.

Pylon have just had their 1980 release 'Gyrate' released for the first time on CD by the DFA- Which makes perfect sense. They are still touring, check the dates here.

Plyon- Danger!! (Z Share) (YSI)

Recently came across a great remix of Suicide's 'Ghostrider': the track is chopped up & and given a thumping beat. Simple but very effective:

What you gonna do, without your ass?

Two versions of 'Nuclear War' today: The first is by Sun Ra who wrote the tune & does his usual Spacejazzcosmic thing whilst warning you about the dangers of a nuclear conflict: 'It's a motherfucker, don't you know? If they push that button your ass got to go'.

Sun Ra- Nuclear War (Z Share) (YSI)

Yo La Tengo covered the song in 2002 (They actually did 4 versions of the track): This one is my favourite as they twist it into a percussive, bass driven stomper complete with children's choir. Would cause devastation if dropped on the right dancefloor at the right time (No pun intended).

Yo La Tengo- Nuclear War (Z Share) (YSI)

An extra cover: Katzenjammers doing a steel band version of Gary Numan's 'Cars'. Hell YES.

Buddy Griffin And His Orchestra- I Got A Secret (I Ain't Gonna Keep) (Z Share)

Long Ball Larry..

Well, i posted some Battles on Friday & i really don't like posting another track from the same E.P so soon BUT.... the Four Tet remix of 'Tonto' is remarkable. When i first heard it i did a little wee. You can buy the full E.P on wax here or you can buy the CD/DVD package here. The DVD features both 'Tonto' & 'Atlas' video's and the making of 'Tonto'.

Battles- Tonto (Four Tet Remix) (Z Share) (YSI)

The new To Rococo Rot album is on the record store shelves, it's called 'ABC123' and it's a continuation of their now familiar mix of live instrumentation & electronic programming:

To Rococo Rot- Ivx (Z Share) (YSI)

I was recently sent some remixes by an artist called Fine Tuning hailing from Jakarta, Indonesia- He's produced an excellent rejiggle of Bauhaus's 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' by slowing down the tempo & adding some percussion. You can catch him on Myspace. More to follow..

Bauhaus- Bela Lugosi's Dead (a Fine-tuning remix) (Z Share) (YSI)

An Extra treat- New Burial long player 'Untrue' is released next month, Mary Anne Hobbs featured a special preview mix (put together by Kode 9) on her Radio 1 experimental show. Bless her, she does get a bit excited..

What good is money if it can't inspire terror in your fellow man..

Went to the Battles/Prefuse 73 show on Wednesday night: Both bands were on top, top form. Prefuse 73 used an array of gadgets & a live drummer to weave his stellar back catalogue into one pulsing, electronic throb.
Battles just ripped it up- Months of touring have seen them hone their live show, with drummer John Stainer taking centre stage. The rest of the band flip between guitars, keyboards & samplers to create a huge wall of metallic sound. 'Atlas' was the obvious standout, but in truth the whole show was Big, Big, Big.
Here is a new remix of 'Tonto' by The Field:

This was a B-side of Prefuse 73's last single 'The Class of 73'. Features John Stainer on the sticks:

I'm Unflipable..

A new long-player from Buck 65 and it's very decent: He's back to those dusty beats & quick witted rhymes. If you get the chance, go see him live. He'll make you laugh. Out loud. He also scratches up a storm:

During the recent feature with the Six foot pigeon they mentioned their love of Colleen Et Les Boîtes À Musique. It reminded me to post some here. Splendid.

If you want to make beautiful music, you must play the black and the white notes together...

A new compilation has recently surfaced on Soma records, 'Sci.Fi.Lo.Fi. Vol.1'. It has been compiled by Andrew Weatherall & it's a sumptuous collection of Rockabilly, early Rock & Roll & even has some Killing Joke. It's one of the best compilation albums i've heard this year, full of little gems. It is available at Bleep. Some tracks from it:

Introducing: X District

These are exciting times my friends: Music is being conceived and distributed in new & interesting ways. Take X District for example. They are a collaboration between Warp records artist Jimmy Edgar and Laura Clarke. They have only met once, for 5 minutes. All the music has been made via online video connection. They make sleek, seductive electronic beats. There is a long player slated for early 2008, have a listen to current single "Color Correction":

Every one's banging on about how Radiohead have shattered the music industry: This could well be true. But they've also made a great record. 'In Rainbows' is majestic.

The beardy drummer from !!! (John Pugh) has quit the band to concentrate on Free Blood. Their first EP is out now & contains a remix by Hot Chip. You can get the full EP from Bleep.

Introducing: Six Foot Pigeon

I was recently contacted by the Six Foot Pigeon, they expressed a shared admiration of 'Tanzmusik'. I asked them to describe themselves:

"Our component parts have always been engaged in little but important musical brow furrowing. the music here was all made from the sweet parts of a downtrodden year living together in Bristol.
Our primary influences came from sitting on benches, looking out of windows & watching Hereford Utd fc. musically we have been inspired by the musical braille of moondog, sun ra, cluster, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, thelonious monk, kraftwerk, squarepusher, joe meek & gamelans etc.
Our favourite colour is red, but it also isn't.
Most of our existing recordings are from one off improvisations & Casio Sk1's mandolin's & pots & teacups. A lot of it recorded directly onto a dictaphone, the recording medium favoured by ghosts & shadows of birds.
We like Colleen Et Les Boites a Musique"

A couple of tracks for you:

Music is everybody's possession. It's only publishers who think that people own it.

The new Grizzly Bear EP 'Friend' contains some new material, re-working of old material &, as the title suggests, some friends covering Grizzly tracks. Bradford from Deerhunter covers 'Knife' with his side project Atlas Sound & turns up the Bliss:

Recent Animal Collective single 'Peacebone' has been rejiggled by Pantha Du Prince: He turns it into a minimal/melodic tech thingy. Would love to hear some AC in a club environment.

I've never really cared much for Ol' Blue eyes in the past but recently came across his 1970 concept album 'Watertown'. The title track is superb:

A Couple of points of interest: A couple of new Joakim remixes have surfaced, one for Alter Ego & one for Gucci Soundsystem. Grab them here.
There's a rare interview with Burial up on the Hyperdub records blog: He talks about the response to his debut album, and his thoughts on new album 'Untrue' which is released in November.

Take care of yourselves, and each other...

'12 Crass songs' by Jeffrey Lewis is Ace Ace Ace- They sound like they could be his original compositions which i suppose is the point. The record is much more produced than a normal Jeff Lewis record, sounds sublime. Buy it here.

Pinch Punch first of the month: Thought i'd post up some old faves today. Quasi's 'Hot Shit' swirls into action with a brew of backward guitars & synthy strings. Then you get the Krautrock drums. 'Hot Shit on a silver platter'. Ace.
