Fancy hearing the sound of the Nevada desert? Check out Sunburned Hand of the Man. Apparently these fella's drove themselves mad in the desert, stumbled down to Las Vegas were they bumped into Kieran Hebden (he was sampling the sounds of slot machines). He quickly recorded their ramblings in the honeymoon suite of the Howard Johnson Inn. Here are the results: (N.B. the above story may be factually incorrect)

I recently discovered Stereolab's 'Blue Milk' over at the Deerhunter blog: I've had it on repeat pretty much over since. It's a deceptively simple song, for the first 8 and a half minutes an effortless keyboard phrase builds & builds, layer after layer is added until.....If you've not heard it i'll let you find out for yourself. Possibly the best song ever..for today at least.

'I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then i followed it in..' You should know this from the Big Lebowski soundtrack, the perfect juxtaposition of jolly music & gloomy lyrics. (By using the word juxtaposition, am i now a cunt? I fear so..)

I was chatting to a band over the weekend who have been described as a cross between Captain Beefheart & Frank Zappa. Unfortunately i can't remember the bands name, but it did remind me to post some Beefheart. This is also from the Big Lebowski OST.

Been a bit late getting onto the whole Dan Deacon thing: Wikipedia describe him as an 'absurdist electronic music composer/performer'. His live shows are becoming the stuff of legend, he uses a slew of electronic gizmo's to create a unique sound. Just don't nick his green skull...

Introducing: Mojib

Mojib is an electronic music producer hailing from Sweden. I've had his track 'Break of Dawn' on repeat for the last couple of weeks. His debut album comes out soon, so we had a little chat:

How long have you been making music?
Three years now. Only fooled around with my guitar before that.

Influences?
Lots of artists but as far as sampling goes I'm trying not to sound like another DJ Shadow copy.

"Break of dawn" comprises 3 or 4 different samples- Is this your normal
method of making tunes or do you compose your own material?
No, Break of dawn sounds more like a Sigur ros remix then a real song. Some songs shouldn't be sampled at all and I would put Sigur ros in that category. But I didn't realize that it was Sigur ros at that time and when I put the drums on it and the soft synths it turned out very well, and people liked it a lot. So in the end I put it on my forthcoming album cause it's good, even if its basically a remix.
I like to sample but I usually keep it a bit more subtle. When I don't find the sample I want, or the sound I'm looking for I usually end up recording it myself. Other people just tend to do it better than myself.

What software/hardware do you use?
I like to keep it simple: I use Ableton Live for most of my stuff.

What are your favourite tunes/records of this year?
There has been lots of good records this year... But right now it's still the Queens of the stone age album along with tracks from Sixtoo, UNKLE ("Broken" is amazing), Feist, Fink, Caribou... And I recently discovered Anita Kerr from the 60s. She and her choir has a track called "Flowers never bend with the rainfall" which mashes very well with Four tets "My angel rocks back and forth" if you just change the key. It's madness and beautiful at the same time! Will end up on some mixtape for sure.

Mojib's album 'Whimsical lifestyle' is released in October on Non- existent records. You can pre-order the album here. He has also some mixes available for download which comprise over 50 UNKLE tracks welded together: They are very good. You can grab them from the MP3 section of his website. Also catch his myspace page, featuring clips from the record.
