And hurry up with my Waffles..

Fresh tracks today: First up is the new single from Prefuse 73, just got my hands on the album & it's a definite return to form after the patchy 'Surrounded by Silence'. 'Preparations' is released in October and there are some live dates in support of this, details here.

Optimo have remixed the new Pepe Deluxe single & turned up the drums. It's a psych wig-out- The 3rd summer of Love indeed..

The new PJ Harvey record is due in September, apparently it's a very stripped down affair. Lead single 'When under Ether' is masterly, it bodes very well for 'White Chalk':

This is England

Only just watched the latest Shane Meadows movie 'This is England'- He perfectly captures the feel of 1980's British suburbia, even down to the little details: the lead character Shaun's mode of transport is a Raleigh Boxer (Possibly the best bike ever). As ever with Meadows Films the soundtrack is superb, fusing together pop hits with the Ska & reggae that was so prominent in the early 80's. Original composition's are provided by Ludovico Einaudi. Here are a few tunes from it:

The Upsetters- Return Of Django (Z Share)

You can get the soundtrack here. The Dvd is out September 3rd.

That is all.

Take it easy my friend...

Summer seems to have finally arrived- time to break out the Pimms & stick on the Tropicalia. This Soul Jazz compilation has been on heavy rotation since it's release last year, it features all the prominent artists from the scene: Os Mutantes, Tom Ze, Jorge Ben, Gal Costa etc..
The songs are pure pop music, the production is raw: Fuzz guitars and metallic drums give the tracks a distinct sound. Many artists have revealed their love of Tropicalia, including Beck, David Byrne, Tortoise & Kurt Cobain to name a few. Check out a few of the tracks from the compilation:

Os Mutantes- Bat Macumba (Z Share)

Great Odin's raven..

Drumtrax: Gary Davis (Not that one) is one of those mythical NY producers: He made disco records with a twist, you can check his compilation here.
The drums on 'The Professor here' sound like they were recorded in a tin can:

Lets blow some minds here...

As it's a Friday here are some tunes to move ya feet: If you've had your ears anywhere near a television set this year you'll have heard the Gossip's "Standing in the way of control" blasting out (Thanks to Channel 4's 'Skins' promotion): It's had a plethora of remixes, the Gossip even posted the separate parts online for a short while.
The Playgroup mix sounds nothing like the original, but it is a top piece of diskotackle with added mucky bass.

Radio Slave's latest gets the Josh Wink treatment: Probably best heard loud, at around 4 am in a dark, dingy club.

It's your life, but my responsibility..

A new Arcade Fire track for you, 'No Cars go' has been released as a single & this is the B-side. I'm not sure if this was written on their current tour, they seem to have taken European cities congestion problems as an inspiration: It's a damn shame about that roadblock.

Arcade Fire- Surf City Eastern Block (Z Share)

Had the new Modeselektor record for a couple of weeks now & it's very fine: One of the standout tracks is the collaboration with Thom Yorke, so i thought I'd post it:

Another album that i've had on steady rotation is the Arthur & Yu record: This track in particular sounds like Jeff Buckley fronting the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Nice:

Some Velvet morning when i'm straight..

Some sad news from the weekend, Lee Hazlewood died at the age of 78 after a three year struggle with terminal renal cancer. Best known for his work with Nancy Sinatra, he wrote the iconic "These boots are made for walking" and recorded two further albums with her.
Their most famous collaboration "Some Velvet Morning" is both eerie & magical- The elegant production and Sinatra's playful lyrics pitch perfectly against Hazlewood's menacing delivery.
He continued to record & last year released his final record , the acclaimed 'Cake or Death'.

There is a new Shocking Pinks 7" released today: 'This aching deal' just maybe the poppiest ever DFA release. The b-side 'August 3rd' has been remixed by Arkitype who turns in a blissful electronica version.

What goes around comes around: Shriekback's 'My spine is the Bassline' was re-released last week on Compost records. Originally released in 1982 it combines elements of disco & electro and has recently been re-discovered by a new generation of Dee-jays. As any good tune should.

Do I look like some kind of Beatnik?

There has been approximately 8,657 remixes of New Young Pony Club's "Ice Cream". Tiga has turned in one of the better ones, keeping the disco elements of the original & adding some Fuzz. Muy Bien:
