DJ

Had the pleasure of seeing two cult indie rock hero's last night- Daniel Johnston and Jeffery Lewis.

If you haven't seen Jeffery Lewis live make sure you do- He's a great story teller & always manages to have the crowd hanging on his every word. He also does 'live' video's in the form of comic books. You can read one here.

Much anticipation surrounded Daniel Johnston's set, anyone who knows anything about the man will realize how much effort it is for him just to get up on stage. When he emerged he quickly ducked back into the dressing room, for a moment it looked like he'd bolted. However he quickly returned, songbook in hand. He does struggle a bit to sing & play the guitar, after a few solo numbers Jeff Lewis & the other support act Adem returned to help him out. His voice sounded really beautiful. He also seemed fairly relaxed, even cracked a few jokes:
DJ- 'I had a dream that a man got sentenced to death for attempted suicide....& the man was me!' Maybe you had to be there...

Daniel Johnston- The Beatles

Jeffery Lewis- Don't let the record label take you out to Lunch

The new Battles record is out this week- Grab it as soon as you can. Check out the video for first single 'Atlas'-

Nice.

Are you talking to Me?

New Dizzee- HEAVY. (N.B Watch out if you listen to this on headphones, i did the other day & it nearly took my ears off).
Dizzee Rascal- Sirens.

The Justice album will be everywhere this summer. Whether you like it or not. This is one of my favourite cuts from the record-
Justice- Phantom Part II. Discosquelch.

Off to see Cornelius on friday, check out his new album 'Sensuous'. Its very good.
Cornelius- Beep it. If you don't like this track there is something wrong with you.
You can also check the video here-

If you do it again...

Some new LCD- This is a b-side from 'All my friends'. A 12 minute discoelectroboogie wigout- Complete with drum solo:
LCD Soundsystem- Freak out/Starry eyes.

John Cale- All my friends.
This sounds like Joy Division covering LCD, John Cale sounding eerily like Ian Curtis.

Following on from last years excellent 'Orchestra of Bubbles' collaboration with Ellen Allien, Apparat releases solo record 'Walls'. First single 'Holdon' has been remixed by Modeselektor who apply a nice bit of dirt-
Apparat- Holdon (Modeselektor remix)

Modeselektor have also just released a new mix album, details here.

After all that noise, something different- Recently picked up Neil Young's 'Live at Massey hall' record. Its very strange hearing him introduce 'Old Man' as a new song. His voice sounds amazing, it fucking soars.
Neil Young- Old Man (Live at Massey Hall)

The Futuresonic festival takes place this week in Manchester- Often described as the Manc Sonar this year boasts a fine line up including Faust, Clark, Black Devil Disco Club & Kode 9 amongst many others. You can get full line up details & ticket prices here & here.
A couple of tunes-

Clark- Herzog. Audio version of beauty & the beast. Definitely does not sound like Dario G.

Faust- Jennifer.

Maybe all music in the future will be made on one of these-

If anyone would like to buy me one you are more than welcome.
See you at the festie.

Business

Political Hip- Hop finds its natural home: Hungary.
"Sometimes we make a war"

A three day weekend, time to rock out:

The Raconteurs side project is back: New White Stripes single "Icky Thump"

Really getting into the new Deerhunter record- They've also just released a new E.P which is top notch . Here they are sounding very Fall like-
"Lake Somerset"

Midlake- "Roscoe" (Beyond the Wizards sleeve remix)
Reminds me a bit of the theme to Mash & then it goes a bit Fleetwood Mac. Can't seem to dis-lodge it from my brain at the moment.

A cover version to finish & this one is particularly good. Beck doing Hank Williams "Your Cheatin' Heart"

Do One.

Rip Sounds

Lots of good dubstep records around at the mo- the scene is brimming with talented young producers: Burial, Skream, Shackleton, Kode 9 etc. Here are a couple of bangers-

Juju- Punks

Bass Clef- Cannot be Sraightened

Will probably sound a bit farty on computer speakers. Get them on a big soundsystem & they'll knock your block off.

The guest on this weeks Beats in Space was Juan Maclean- get it on the podcast.

Nice one Yo.
